How often should I be adding salt to my Water Softener?

Perhaps you recently added salt to your softener, but it already looks like it’s time to add more. How much salt an average softener should go through?

You’ll want to check your water softener regularly to make sure you have enough salt to soften the water. The amount of salt your water softener will use will depending on the following factors:

  • The hardness of your water
  • The amount of iron in your water
  • How much water you use.
  • The concentration of chlorides in your water.

We recommend checking your salt levels on a manual water softener every 3-4 weeks. Doing this regularly will give you a good idea of your consumption.

How much salt should I be adding to my Water Softener?

Most water treatment experts recommend that the level of salt should be three to four inches above the water level.

How can I check that my Water Softener is working correctly?

In times gone by people have reccomended taste testing the water. Please do not do this. Granulite salt is not suitable for consumption. The best way to test that your water softener is working to perform a water hardness test with some CK1111 Water Hardness Strips. Simply drip the hardness strip into the water. If the strip indicates the water is soft you know everything is in order. If not it’s time to replenish your salt.

How will I know which salt is suitable for my water softener?

The CK0130 GG178 Glacia Granulite Water Softening Salt 25kg is a great granulite salt product for all of the water softeners offered on our site.
